Topography of Terror 2010

In 2005 a competition was held to reshape the whole site of the Topography of Terror, housing the documentation center in more expansive quarters that could accommodate the growing needs of the Topography of Terror as a research and educational institution—and the growing numbers of visitors. Architect Ursula Wilms and landscape designer Heinz W. Hallmann won the competition with a design that pairs a sober, aloof building with a flat, open landscape. The site looks tidier and emptier than before, offering up a desolate and sweeping space to mark a history of repression, torture, and murder. The open gravel-and-concrete ground sets off the decaying ruins of Gestapo cells starkly, and the sleek documentation center provides a discreet background for the indoor exhibition. Wilms and Hallmann wanted not only to memorialize the history of the site, but also to make room for a sense of collective responsibility towards this history by bringing the ruins to light and setting off the site as distinctly alien from its surroundings.
