Police Academy
Although the city of Oranienburg pursued Libeskind’s design for the Nazi-barracks site for a while, it eventually decided to locate the campus of the Brandenburg Police Academy there. The new campus opened in 2006. Extant Nazi-era structures were adapted for new uses; many of the ruins were restored; and new buildings were added. There is minimal marking of the history of the site, and no public access except for authorized visitors—unlike Libeskind’s design, which would have made the area and its history open and accessible. In the Police Academy, there are small information plaques in significant historic buildings; the images and contents of these plaques, along with an overview, can also be found on the website of the Police Academy (PDF).
